A domain name consists of two or more words separated by a period. The last word (the far right) is called a "top-level domain". Here are some common top-level domains and their use:

.COM
Used for commercial entities. It is the most popular top-level domain. Anyone can register a .com domain.

.NET
Originally used for networking organizations such as Internet Service Providers and backbone providers. Today, anyone can register a .net domain.

.ORG
Designed for miscellaneous organizations, including non-profit groups. Today, anyone can register a .org domain.

Country Codes
Other top-level domains include those for countries (.ZW for Zimbabwe, .UK for the United Kingdom, .ZA for South Africa, etc.), which are based on the International Standards Organization's 3166 standards for country abbreviations.

To the left of the top-level domain is what is called the "second-level domain." In Interactive Villages.com, "Interactive Villages" represents a second-level domain within the top-level domain of .com.

What’s the best top level domain and why?
It is the .com domain and there are many reasons why, let list 1 or 2.

Google loves a .com domain because it’s the oldest and largest "SEO & Authority"

The .com domain extension is by far the most used and valuable domain suffix. Put bluntly, Google is biased towards websites with a .com TLD.

Although businesses may wonder why .com is still afforded so much authority by Google. The answer is within human interaction with the search engine. Cognitive fluency favors a top-level domain (TLD) that’s easy and familiar.

A website with the domain name yourbusiness.com is likely to be offered more authority by Google than yourbusiness.co.zw or yourbusiness.business because users are more likely to type in yourbusiness.com than yourbusiness.co.zw or any other TDL for that matter.

  • Owning a .COM domain lends credibility to your brand.
  • Owning a .COM implies that you are more established.
  • Search engines can sometimes favor.COM domains over others.
  • Most people will always assume your website ends with .COM
